The Nvidia GTX 1050 Remains a Mainstream GPU
Nvidia Geforce Gtx 1050, Based on the Pascal architecture, remained announced as of January 2017. However, unlike the faster models, the GTX 1050 uses the GP107 chip, manufactured in a 14nm process at Samsung.
The portable version differs slightly in clocks but remains equipped with 640 shader units, just like the desktop model. In addition/, it ships with up to 4 GB of GDDR5-VRAM connected via a 128-bit interface and a memory data rate of 7 Gbps (112 GB/s).
The GP107 chip remains manufactured on a 14 nm Fin FET process at Samsung. It offers several new features, including support for DisplayPort 1.4 (ready), HDMI 2.0b, HDR, and Simultaneous Multi-Projection (SMP). As well as improved H.265 video decoding and decoding (PlayReady 3.0). Our article dedicated to Pascal architecture has a complete list of improvements and the new Pascal desktop GPUs.
Presentation Of Nvidia Geforce Gtx 1050 Mobile 2GB
The presentation of the GeForce GTX 1050 can differ quite a bit, contingent on the cooling performance of the laptop. It can remain as fast as the desktop model under ideal conditions, but the portable model is usually slower. The GeForce GTX 960M is still outperformed by around 30%, making the GTX 1050 comparable to a GTX 965M. It is, therefore, a superior conventional GPU. Games from 2016 can remain played on high settings and in Full HD resolution.
The power ingesting of the GeForce GTX 1050 remains unevenly on par with the old GTX 960M, which would mean around 40-50 watts [probably due to better selection and optimized parts], therefore much lower compared to the desktop counterpart. However, this means that the graphics card will generally remain used for powerful multimedia notebooks and entry-level gaming systems with at least 15.4 inches.
Is GTX 1050 2GB Good For Gaming?
GTX 1050 benchmarks. As you can see, the graphics card remains excellent for the most popular esports titles. You are running all of them on 60+ FPS and high detail settings with the Apex Legends exception. The GTX 1050 is an entry-level graphics card that appeared at the dawn of time, or as other people call it, in 2016. Back then, it was good enough to play all titles at 1080p. Today some are downright dismissive of its capabilities or as a cheap option. So let’s look at what games you can play and what other options we have.
The Titles Here Didn’t Render Well On A GTX 1050,
Many were below the “playable” mark, around 30 FPS. Now we know some of you might think 20 FPS on low settings. It’s playable if you’re a true fan of the game, but worse, some games are below the 20 FPS bar, so it better gets a sound graphics card if you’re looking to play, e.g. Final Fantasy XV.
PRO and CONS of the GTX 1050 in 2020
- Decent power efficiency, good if you have a fragile power supply
- Suitable for playing Esport titles on high settings and 1080p
- Small, fits in a small form factor
Poor price/performance ratio, you can get better cards for the same price (around 150 USD), for example, a much more convenient GTX 1650 SUPER or RX 570.
Less than 20 FPS on many 2018+ titles while playing at medium 1080p settings.
It’s four years old and will worsen as driver support is lost and new unsupported technologies emerge.
At What Price Would I Buy A GTX 1050?
What is very impressive and quite curious is that the GTX 1050 came out at $109, and its price only increased over time. Now you see it retailing for around $150. This is due to the crypto mining craze in recent years, and the long time it took for Nvidia to release a new architecture. That said, I wouldn’t buy a GTX 1050 at retail. Just buy it used and tested from a trustworthy seller, who I know didn’t use it for mine. I would pay $100 max, even though all the sellers on Amazon and Craiglist sell for more than that. I have better options for around $150, like the RX 570, RX 580, and GTX1060.
GTX 1050 Options, Nvidia Geforce Gtx 1050 Mobile 2GB
As of 2020, the best option for around the same price as the GTX 1050 is the RX 570, and you can check here why this remains the case and how it compares to other budget graphics cards.
Is The GTX 1050 Still Good In 2020?
The GTX 1050 remains good in 2020 for playing 1080 esports like League of Legends, Starcraft, CS: GO, Fortnite, Overwatch, and Dota 2. This graphics card is unsuitable for playing newer titles that came out in 2018 or later, as it will generate less than 30 FPS on average to low settings. The performance-for-price ratio is terrible, and you can get better options for the money in 2020, like the RX 570.
History and Specifications Of The GTX 1050
The GTX 1050 came out in 2016, and Samsung manufactures the chip at 14nm. Its performance is similar to that of a GTX 1050, GTX 1050TI and even GTX 950 laptop. So this will be useful if you consider one of these graphics cards. The GTX 1050 comes with 2 GB and 4 GB, depending on the manufacturer. Some of its selling points in 2016 were its high efficiency with a TDP of 75W while running games at great detail 1080p settings.
GTX 1050 Benchmarks
The card is still sound if your intended use is 1080p esports titles, so here are the average benchmarks across 1080p esports titles:
The GTX 1050 is a sound card that reigned as the budget option for far too long, so long that it even inadvertently became more expensive and, therefore, not the best budget card. If you plan to play any Esport title, the GTX 1050 will be good for you. However, I would not buy it since there are better options on the market for the same price. That existence said, if you got it as a gift, thank you, as many would say, the GTX 1050 is the least bit good graphics card to play today, and you won’t know the pain of playing LoL at less than 30 FPS.
